You'll probably want a little of both. I definitely
recommend getting the 5-string banjo book as it
is excellent. Video tapes work, but it's good
to have a teacher actually work with you and
guide you. I am just learning myself. The
amazing thing about the banjo is by just doing
a little work by yourself, you'll find yourself
quickly generating some impressive sounds.
BTW, for a beginning banjo I would highly
recommend the Deering Goodtime banjo. It is
an excellent instrument and the right price
for somebody just starting out.
