Banjo head tuning

I would like more info on tunning the banjo head,to Gb or A, with or without strings ect. I have a 1984 Scruggs model gibson and use the snuffy smith bridge.The banjo seems to need a little something to help the sound, I know most of the problem is probably me,but any info would be appreciate.
