Don Wayne was influenced by many people. I wouldnt really say he has a style all his own. Listen to his "Heroes" album. Allen Shelton, JD Crowe, and of course his father were his main influences. Granted the Hayseed Dixie stuff doesnt reflect any of those great players but his actual Bluegrass material does. He learned most of his style from his father. The "double roll" and all of the single string licks all came from Don Reno.
It would be hard to say Don Wayne is the best. The best at what? Earl was an innovator. His sense of timing and syncopation is unmatched. No one can fit notes in where he can. I know many of my fellow Earl fans will agree. Earl is the best at what he does. I love Earl's style more than anyone else's. JD Crowe, Sonny Osborne, and others started out by trying to do what Earl did. Many times their own original numbers duplicated Earl's licks. Later, their styles evolved but it took awhile. While their style was evolving so was Earl's.
