Flatt and Scruggs performing on the Beverly Hillbillys
This recently-released video will make an enjoyable souvenir for fans of Flatt & Scruggs.
The blurb on the package states: “Granny's homesick and wants to go back to the hills… until the hills come to Granny in the form of the Clampetts’ friends, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Good times and great music are soon being had by all. First air date: March 31, 1965.”
The show opens with a scene of Granny being homesick for home. Jed plans to ease Granny’s blues by arranging a visit from Flatt & Scruggs, who are in town performing.
The magic works and Granny joins into play the autoharp and sing with her old friends. Lester likes the trio sound so much that he arranges with Jed for Granny appear with them on stage, playing old folk songs. She surprises everyone by showing up in a sequined dress and singing her old songs in a rock and roll style. Lester & Earl also get to display their culinary skills by whipping up 12 dozen batches of biscuits and redeye gravy for a starving Jethro.
Among the tunes performed are bits and pieces songs including “Cumberland Gap,” “Little Girl In Tennessee,” “She'll Be Coming ‘Round The Mountain,” and the “Martha White Theme.”
This video features two full-length episodes of the Hillbillies, both of which feature musical guests. The other installment involves a visit from their Cousin Roy, who is played by country performer Roy Clark.
