It's great to have this web site and to think that Earl might actually read the messages.
I saw Flatt & Scruggs three times and the Revue twice. And the Saturday afternoon TV shows. You don't realize what you've got until it's gone. But it's great that Earl is doing some recording and performing. Lately I'm listening to my F&S recordings again. As years go by, I'm more and more struck by the tone, clarity, technique, speed, beauty and cleverness of Earl's playing. (Enough adjectives?)
I love all the great players--Fleck, Sonny, Trischka, Crowe, Dillard, Munde, Keith, Eldridge and on and on, but Earl is the greatest in my opinion. (Even though I know the notion of a 'greatest' player is kinda ridiculous.)
I'm kicking myself for missing both Emminence, MO (had a conflict) and Merlefest (too far?), but I hope to see Earl in his next round of appearances and maybe even get to shake his hand.
Final note--last summer I bought an Earl Scruggs Mastertone, after maybe 36 years of playing. I still can't get over how great it sounds and looks.
