You say that it isn't bluegrass without a banjo? I'm a banjo player but I have to question that statement. What about on slow BLUEGRASS songs where a banjo doesn't play? Are saying that isn't banjo? Or are you just saying that if a group doesn't have a banjo in the group then they aren't bluegrass? I would to question that! if someone got up and played Foggy Mountain Breakdown without a banjo it would still be bluegrass, GRANTED IT WOULD SOUND HORRIBLE AND I WOULDN"T LIKE IT, But it would still be the bluegrass style.
