I once read in an interview Earl did that he will
choose his gauge strings depending on the sound he
wants when recording. I think for the most part he
uses light gauge strings. For years he used
Vega brand. I bet he probably also used
Black Diamond strings when he was young. One could
get these easily through the mail order catalogs.
As far as picks I remember reading he liked the National
finger picks. These were great picks. I myself use the
old National style picks. They have a great sound and
are .025 in gauge. Nothing like the new style of Nationals for
they just don't compare. I can't speak for what he might use
today. For a thumbpick, the hard plastic ones.
National or other brand. I have noticed lately he has
used the white pearl colored or multi colored thumbpicks.
