One of the reasons Earl's tone is so clear is that he not only played the banjo fast, and he not only played it precise, but he played it hard. Every one of those high eighth notes he played when he would slide down to the bottom of the neck could be heard at the back of the auditorium and that made the whole audience go absolutly insane.
That's one of the reasons why Earl is the master.
