Do you have Earl's book "Earl Scruggs and the 5-String Banjo?" It contains a lot of information on questions such as yours and illustrates how he solved the problem of the "flying picks." He cuts little grooves inside the thumb pick. It helps to hold the pick on your thumb. Hope this helps.
