I bought a used Alvarez as my first banjo (well sort of, the el cheapo Kay that I had didn't really count...). I paid $300 with case in a music store in Austin, TX. It has planetary tuners and a wood rim. Most banjos in that price range including those mentioned above have cast aluminum rims that sound somewhat tinny. Moral of the story, look around. However, the Deering & Goldtone are easy to find, inexpensive, and good quality beginner instruments. Good Luck!
