The book Earl Scruggs and The Five-String Banjo is pretty much considered the Bible of banjo teaching. I would strongly suggest that you get the accompanying cassette. The book is probably best suited to someone who has played either some banjo or at least another stringed instrument.

If you are a complete beginner, I would strongly suggest getting the Murphy Henry videos. Murphy gears her teaching to beginners, and instead of doing exercises she has you playing tunes from the very beginning. She is a big Scruugs fan and most of the tunes on her videos are Scruggs tunes. Check her site out at:

I started by using her method, it sure has made using Earls book a lot easier as I had learned a lot of the basics already.
