I can't help getting in on this discussion. I have a Earl Standard. I've had it for 8 years now. It is a very good banjo, but it must be properly set up. I've found that a Snuffy Smith head and bridge helps quite a bit to get the sound that I want. Snuffy asked me what I wanted. I said, "Just make it sound like Earl's."

Now all that said, a friend was here a while back with an identical banjo, and he kept saying that he wished his sounded like mine. We decided to go to Snuffy's and have it set up properly. It sounded good, but it didn't sound like mine. I don't know the answer to why unless it has to do with my banjo having been picked much more, but there was a difference.
