I watched Earl pick "You Are My Flower" tonight at Merlefest, both from my seat which was very close to the front, and on the big screen tv. Best I can tell Earl works the top three strings, and occasionally the third with his thumb, while using the index finger to play the second and third strings, and the middle to work the bottom string only. That would be real close to banjo picking as far as the duties of each finger. Earl uses his thumb for melody note whenever possible to give them an accent. I hope this will help to answer some of the questions that have come up abouthis guitar style.
